I am That which knows. I am not 'Stian', and I have always known that I am I, but never recognized it. I am I.
What does one do after having recognized ones own "true nature"? Extend this recognition to be present in as much of the day as possible? How does one do that? Just abide in the recognition? For those who have yet to recognize: 1) Download this document: http://www.integralnaked.org/docs/infinity.doc (it's introduction can be read here: http://www.integralnaked.org/talk_infinity.aspx. Don't mind the goofy website). That document is written by Ken Wilber and is called "From You to Infinity in 3 Pages". 2) Open the document, and before you read anything do the instructions on the website, reprinted here: Click on “Edit” in your tool bar, then click on “Find,” which will bring up a “Find and Replace” window. Enter “John” in the “find what” field, and then click on the “Replace” tab and enter your name in the “replace with” field. Then, click “Replace All.” 3) Read the first paragraph (the first bit of text that ends with a parenthesis), and then don't read anymore. 4) Open your mind. Seriously. Suspend your doubts. This text made me recognize my "true nature" within 124 words (yes, I counted them) for the very first time in my life. After that last sentence, notice if you are expecting anything. 5) Follow the breath, closely, intimately, gently, for one single breath cycle. Then one more. Then one more. 6) Read each and every sentence as though it might be the one sentence that points to "it" for you. Seriously. I was cooked and ready to serve within 5 sentences. Awesome stuff. |

Hello,
I am very new to all of this but have been quite touched by Kenneth's teachings. So thank you very much. With some work I have been able to go into 2nd gear a couple of times and this has been a pretty profound state for me with a very different sense of self as Verb rather than Noun. What I'm wondering is that I am also able to, when i remember to, pop into a state where I am strongly awake to the present moment with very little if any "monkey mind" thought occurring and an ability to witness impermanence and the sense of nowness and pretty much a lack of judgement. However, I am still definitely having a sense of self and if I am to ask "Who Am I?" in this state, the answer comes back with my name. So to me this feels like some sort of positive present "Awakeness" state, but it doesn't feel even as strong as 2nd gear. I first had this state a couple of times 15 years ago when I was a teenager and I thought it was pretty far out at the time. I forgot about it for years, then stumbled upon meditation and the first time I popped back into this awakeness it was like a long lost friend that I had found again. I guess I am trying to figure out if I am having some sort of 3rd gear experience or if this is some sort of 1st/2nd gear experience since comparatively 2nd gear seems so much more interesting than this state. Also, is this "Awakeness" dwelling a good practice or should I focus on trying to get into a 2nd gear state? The only problem with 2nd gear is that I need time and space to do it since I become pretty detached. This Awakeness I can pop into whenever I think about it, so just walking down the street or whatever, so Awakeness is much more amenable to informal, unstructured practice. Thanks! |

It is truly wonderful to see tathagatagarbha and vipassana perspectives presented in a non-combative way ... congratulations and thanks to Kenneth for this achievement.
This may be an unanswerable question but .... there is a crucial turning point in the vipassana path, the point of stream entry, the point beyond which further progress is inevitable "even though he may be extremely heedless". I think of this as like puncturing a tyre ..... once the tyre (deluded mind) has been punctured with a moment of complete cessation, it is inevitable that the air will, eventually, all come out. This threshold is extremely important as a motivator for practice .... "if i can just get to stream entry, the tide will change! it won't be this difficult for ever!" So my question is .... is it possible to identify any equivalent turning point using an absolute awareness approach? |
