I was recently fortunate, as many here have been, to converse with Kenneth about practice-related matters. Not surprisingly, this has invigorated and inspired my practice thoughts and intentions.
So, since we are here sharing as we work, I'm sharing some of my current thoughts. Here is some from today: One principle that Kenneth spoke to me about was that of being embedded into experience in contrast to being disembedded from experience. This is quite different from being engaged with or disengaged from experience. This point is really key. I'm going to explore it right now for a moment. You can be embedded and disengaged. You can be embedded and engaged. You can be disembedded and disengaged. You can be disembedded and engaged. so what is embedment/disembedment? and what is engagement/disengagement? Embedment/disembedment is the extent to which the sense of identity is composed of the flow of sensate experience. So embedment is about identity and its constituent elements. In contrast, engagement/disengagement has to do with attentional commitment. One is engaged with those objects to which consistent attention is directed. The question for the yogi is, 'How do these two factors inter-relate?' One way to find out! |

I shared this with Kenneth via email, and he's asked me to post it here in the forum...
I was digging through the Shambhala Sun magazine archives and came across and article by Jack Kornfield titled "A Mind Like Sky: Wise Attention Open Awareness" (read it here --> http://bit.ly/4nhnm5). In the article, Kornfield says that our Awareness is like a focus lens, in that we can zoom all the way in to notice the Three Characteristics of every little micro sensation that arises. In doing so, "Entanglement in our ordinary sense of self dissolves; our troubles and fears drop away. Our entire experience of the world shows itself to be impermanent, ungraspable and selfless. Wisdom is born." This is what Kenneth refers to as 1st Gear. (continued) |
